Objective Functional foods that improve gut health are receiving major interest from the EU consumer and food industry. Many of these foods contain functional microbes or ingredients that provide a health benefit in the human gut. However, the manner by which such health improvements are manifest is not understood. This markedly hampers further industrial development for present and future gut health foods, the required scientific support for functional food claims, and the recognition of these by consumers and their organizations. The SSA GutImpact will identify the gaps in the present knowledge, provide avenues for bridging these, and prepare a technology roadmap for future European public-private and consumer interactions. It specifically aims to address the basic mechanisms by which functional microbes and ingredients affect human gut health in order to allow for their rational development, targeted improvement and safe production. |
